Professor Sonu Goel
Prof. (Dr.) Sonu Goel is a distinguished public health physician and Professor of Health Management at the Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, an Institute of National Importance under the Government of India. With more than two decades of academic, research, and leadership experience, he has made substantial contributions to global and national important initiatives pertaining to public health, health care leadership and tobacco control.
He serves as the Director of the WHO awardee Resource Centre for Tobacco Control (RCTC) and the Program Director of the International Public Health Management Development Program a flagship programme of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. He is also the Convenor of the Scientific Support Group (SSG) of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, where he guides the strengthening of National Tobacco Testing Laboratories. Internationally, he holds appointments as Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and has previously served as Honorary Professor at Swansea University, United Kingdom.
He has led numerous research projects, edited major public health books, and filed multiple patents focused on technology-driven and patient-centred innovations in public health. A prolific academic, he has authored over 270 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to several national and international technical reports and strategic frameworks.
Prof. Goel has received numerous awards and distinctions for his contributions to public health research and leadership. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), a Fellow of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (FIAPSM), and a Fellow of the Indian Public Health Association (FIPHA) among several other professional honors. His exemplary achievements in administration, teaching, and research at PGIMER have earned special commendations. Besides he has held prominent leadership roles in prestigious international organisations, including the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union). His global training initiatives and evidence-driven policy contributions continue to receive recognition from national and international partners alike.
As an educator and mentor, Prof. Goel has trained over 1600 health professionals from nearly 97 countries, and is frequently invited to speak at leading global health conferences. His work continues to shape public health practice, policy, and capacity-building efforts both in India and worldwide.
