Ian Stedman


Ian Stedman is the York University Research Chair in Law, Policy & Personalized Healthcare and an Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. His work sits at the intersection of health law, public policy, and emerging technologies, with a particular focus on ensuring that innovations in healthcare—especially those involving genomics and artificial intelligence—are developed and deployed responsibly. 
 
Stedman currently serves as Chair of the CIHR Institute of Genetics' Advisory Board and Chair of the Canadian Autoinflammatory Network / Réseau Auto-inflammatoire Canadien. Before joining York University, Professor Stedman held the inaugural research fellowship in Artificial Intelligence Law & Ethics at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children’s Centre for Computational Medicine and a post-doctoral fellowship at York University, researching the Governance of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. Stedman now also serves as a legal member on two panels of the Research Ethics Board at SickKids, including the first-of-its-kind panel dedicated exclusively to data science. His work in the area of law and technology earned him the IP Osgoode David Vaver Medal for Excellence in IP Law in 2020.
