This programme is taken by healthcare professionals involved in regular teaching in a clinical or academic capacity – this can include teaching medical students, interns, junior colleagues, bedside teaching etc. With the professionalisation of education, a formal postgraduate qualification in medical or clinical education is seen as increasingly essential if seeking senior positions or positions where teaching forms a large part of the role.
This programme is a Master of Science in Medical Education for Healthcare Professionals. The course is 2 years in duration and made up of 180 CATS in the UK or 90 ECTS in Europe. The PGDip (12 months - 120 CTS/60 ECTS) and PGCert (6 months - 60 CATS/30 ECTS) are earlier exits from the Master’s.
Yes – if you exit with a PGCert or PGDip, you can re-join at a future intake to do the additional modules required to effectively upgrade your award to an MSC. However, there is a 5-year time limit within which you can complete the MSc – the clock starts from the moment you commence the programme until you complete your Master’s – this would allow for an accumulative 3 years (approx.) of time away from the programme.
This programme is not yet accredited by AoME but is undergoing the formal process for accreditation. However, you can still apply for membership to AoME regardless of accreditation. AoME’s accreditation of postgraduate medical education programmes is simply a process whereby the programme provider or institution has a course pre-recognised so that any graduates of that programme will automatically satisfy the academic requirements for membership without having to provide further evidence, only their certificate. However, AoME will also accept postgraduate programmes in Medical Education that are not accredited by them for membership applications but would assess these on a case-by-case basis – you would have to provide further evidence (curriculum and transcripts etc) all of which we can provide. Please see Membership of AoME Information and Guidance for Application for further information.
No, there are no exams as part of this programme. Assessment for the PGCert/PGDip will be on a continuous basis, comprising formative and summative assessments. The formative assessments will be practical and will require the student to plan and implement real teaching sessions based on concepts and principles of evidenced-based educational theory taught throughout the programme. Student’s will then reflect on their teaching session. Assessment for the 2nd year of the MSc will comprise of a professional project that will enable students to identify, understand, appraise, and plan research related to Medical Education. The outcome of the professional project will comprise a journal article and poster presentation.
The certificate is awarded by the University of Warwick; the award itself is no different from completing an on-campus programme at the University of Warwick and the certificate is the exact same as for an on-campus programme and does not say ‘online’. It will simply state the course title ‘Master of Science in Medical Education for Healthcare Professionals’.
To apply for your place on a programme, all you have to is to fill out the online application form, and when requested send in proof of eligibility (confirmation of your previous degree/other qualifications).
