Dr. Akila Anbazhagan
Dr. Akila Anbazhagan is a Consultant Obstetrician, working at Saint Mary’s at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. She completed her MBBS, MD and Diplomate in National Board in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in South Indian. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and has been a consultant since 2012. Her special interest includes Materno- Fetal medicine, fetal growth restriction and high-risk obstetrics.
She is currently the Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire (GMEC) Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) clinical lead which ensures safety and quality assurance of the 9 maternity providers of GMEC.
She is a UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS) steering committee member and is involved in approving studies into rare conditions in pregnant women.
Dr Anbazhagan is currently the Simulation lead at her hospital. Previously she was the Maternity Governance lead in her Trust.
Dr Anbazhagan has been a Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma (MOET) trainer with the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) and has been involved in teaching and training Obstetric emergencies and skills and drills at PROMPT and Maternity Acute Illness course.
She has completed the Human Factors training from the Human Factors Academy and incorporates human factors into all aspects of training and reviewing incidents. In her role she is a member of the governance team and reviews maternity serious incidents and perinatal mortality along the principles of, Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT), Patient Safety Incident Framework (PSIRF), Patient Safety Incident Investigation (PSII) and recommends learning from serious incidents.
She has completed the Mary Seacole Leadership Training with the LEAD academy.
Dr. Anbazhagan was the co-chair of the Black and Asian Maternity Advisory group at GMEC and helped setting maternity standards to improve the care and experience of Black and Asian women. These standards are now incorporated into the Equality and Equity work within the region.
Her other interests include hiking, gardening, and practicing yoga.
