Dr Janus van As

Janus van As is a visionary academic leader, educator, and entrepreneur specializing in Health Professions Education (HPE) and Health Systems Science (HSS). With over 15 years of experience in higher education, he drives innovation at the intersection of technology, health, and learning.

Currently serving as the Lead for the Future of Learning Project, Janus researches and develops cutting-edge AI, VR, and Data Science systems designed to create deep, meaningful educational experiences and ensure graduates are future-competent.

Previously, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Janus played a pivotal role in redeveloping the medical degree programme. He also developed and coordinated programs in Health Systems Science, teaching quality improvement on the Master of Public Health. Additionally, he delivered coursework on Responsible Leadership for Health, Health Entrepreneurship, Health Innovation, Health Financing, and Leading Health Research.

Janus holds a PhD in Education focusing on educational leadership and quality improvement, an MBA in Finance and Investment, a BSc Hons in Plant Science, and a BEd FET in Natural Science. He is passionately dedicated to advancing health systems and fostering a kinder, more caring healthcare environment.
