In this Spotlight with Alumni, we feature Dr Sarah Ashkanani, a medical doctor with a keen interest in dermatology. With nearly two years of clinical experience, she recently completed the iheed/Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Online Professional Diploma in Dermatology. Here, Sarah shares her experience of the programme, from why she chose it to the key takeaways that have helped her grow as a medical professional.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I’m a medical doctor with a strong interest in dermatology, and I’ve been practising medicine for almost two years. I decided to enrol in the Professional Diploma in Dermatology to strengthen my clinical knowledge and enhance the dermatological care I provide to my patients.

I also valued the focus on history taking, empathy in patient care, and the modules on ethics and professionalism. These aspects really added depth to my clinical learning.

How did you manage balancing work and study?
Balancing work and study was definitely challenging, but the flexibility of the programme made it very manageable. The structured assessments helped me stay on track, and the interaction with faculty and peers was engaging and supportive. On top of that, we received excellent academic and technical assistance, which made a big difference.

What were your biggest takeaways from the diploma?
One of the biggest takeaways for me was developing a much deeper understanding of dermatological diagnosis and management. My communication and clinical reasoning skills improved significantly, and I now feel more confident diagnosing dermatological conditions. This has reduced unnecessary referrals and positively impacted patient care.
